Tim Cook to participate in roundtable discussion at National Comprehensive Cancer Network Conference

Apple CEO Tim Cook will participate in a roundtable discussion at an annual conference put on by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). The subject of the discussion, which will take place on March 15 in Hollywood, Florida, is “Cancer and Corporate America: Business as Usual?” It will be moderated by ABC News veteran Sam Donaldson.

This comes on the heels of recent town hall meeting where Tim Cook took the stage to announce that Apple has donated nearly $50 million dollars to Stanford University hospitals as part of its philanthropic strategy. Whether the forthcoming appearance by Cook is a sign of Apple becoming more involved in its philanthropic efforts or simply just a personal appearance is unclear. However, it does look as though Tim Cook has been taking more time to discuss how Apple can contribute to the world of medical research.

Google poaches key members of HP’s Enyo team

Hewlett-Packard can’t catch a break. Late Thursday, on the heels of the struggling computer maker’s announcement that it will lay off 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its global workforce, The Verge learned that the soon-to-be-gutted company will lose half a dozen members of its Enyo team to Google. While some of the team behind webOS’s HTML5-based app framework will remain, those departing for Google, including project leader Matt McNulty, are “responsible for 99 percent of the code,” leaving in doubt webOS’s open-source future. Despite the loss, though, HP said in a statement that its plans for webOS haven’t changed. PayPal partners with 15 major retailers to offer in-store payment alternative

PayPal’s branching out from its online comfort zone. Today, two months after the company revealed it would launch its own credit-card reader to compete with rival Square, PayPal set its sights even higher, announcing that it will take on credit-card companies at the register. To that end, PayPal said it’s joined forces with 15 national retailers to offer shoppers an alternative payment method. And thanks to its partnerships with three leading point-of-sale terminal makers and four point-of-sale software providers, the retailers won’t need to install new hardware, nor will shoppers have to familiarize themselves with yet another device. Russian satellite transmits 121-megapixel pics of earth every 30 minutes

Russia’s ELECTRO-L weather satellite might be able to pick out the individual hail stones that are pummeling your car into oblivion thanks to its 121-megapixel on-board camera. The camera, which transmits its stunning pictures back to earth every 30 minutes, is so sensitive and captures images in such high resolution that not even NASA can match it. Pascal Cagni, Apple’s VP for Europe, bids company adieu

Le Figaro, a nearly 200-year-old French newspaper with a much better reputation than DigiTimes, reported Thursday that Pascal Cagni, Apple’s vice president and general manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, has resigned. Cagni, who spent 12 years with Apple and began as the company’s vice president of Europe in 2000, was instrumental in boosting Apple’s sales in hundreds of countries. And according to 9to5Mac, Cagni played a major role in the development of the iPod, iPhone, and App Store, and had a hand in expanding the company’s retail presence. Facebook introduces Instagram-like ‘Facebook Camera’ app for iPhone

Today, little more than a month after it acquired Instagram, Facebook debuted its own picture-sharing app called, simply enough, Facebook Camera. According to Facebook, the new iPhone app is intended to make “using Facebook photos faster and easier,” but with “tools [that allow users to] crop, rotate and add filters to any picture in [their] camera roll,” it sounds like it could step squarely on Instagram’s toes. Android and iPhone dominate global smartphone market, Windows Phone loses ground

Windows Phone might be making waves in China, but globally, it’s hardly made a dent. In fact, according to market researchers IDC, Windows Phone had a smaller share of the worldwide smartphone market in this year’s first quarter (2.2%) than it did in that same period last year (2.6%). That’s a surprising slide considering Nokia rolled out the first of its Lumia Windows Phones last fall. Meanwhile, Android and Apple’s iPhone seized even bigger slices of the global smartphone market, with 59 percent and 23 percent shares, respectively. Evidence in beta build suggests OS X Mountain Lion could feature Siri-like dictation

A resource file buried within the latest build of Apple’s impending OS X Mountain Lion suggests Siri-like dictation could make an appearance on Mac. The telling reference was discovered by 9to5Mac, which snooped around the beta build’s list of keyboard shortcuts, where it found a “Start Dictation” command. According to that list, and assuming dictation crops up on Mountain Lion, it will be accessed by pressing both command keys simultaneously. HP to lay off 27,000 workers, reinvest savings in R&D

When we told you last week that Hewlett-Packard could shed as many as 25,000 jobs to make up for its disappointing hardware sales, we underestimated the ailing computer maker’s desperation. HP announced today that it will exceed that worst-case estimate, laying off a staggering 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its global work force, by October of 2014 as part of CEO Meg Whitman’s plan to streamline and reinvigorate the company. HP said the layoffs, which will extend to about 8,000 employees this year, should eventually save it between $3 billion to $3.5 billion, most of which will go back into R&D. Google overhauled its Search app for iOS Wednesday with a new, streamlined interface that delivers speedier results, a full-screen image search, and shortcuts to whatever other Google apps users might have on their phones.
