Best Bluetooth Speakers 2018 You Should Buy

Bluetooth speakers are not new technology, they’ve been around for quite some time now. However, over the last couple years they have seen quite a comeback due to one reason – the technology is much better than it was a few years ago. We now experience reliable connections to our speakers for a lot of cars now, bluetooth comes standard. Now is the time to buy a bluetooth speaker.

In this article we’re going to talk about the 10 best bluetooth speakers that are currently on the market. We have carefully chosen this list based on quality, sound, battery life, and of course, price. Let’s dive into our top 10 list of best bluetooth speakers of 2018!

UE Boom 2

The original UE Boom experience some great success, and the UE Boom 2 adds to that! Are you looking for a speaker with loud capabilities that maintains quality all the way up? Look no further. On top of that, the UE Boom 2 is incredibly portable and durable. On top of that, it is completely waterproof! Great for any occasion, around the pool and IN the pool.

Quality

I’m only going to say this about one speaker. The UE Boom 2 is rock solid, some might even say bulletproof (don’t test this). It can handle wear and tear very well, and if taken care of properly will last a long time. Again, I will mention that it is waterproof. All in all its pretty tough to wear this thing down.

Sound

Loud. Period. The UE Boom 2, just like the original UE Boom packs a huge punch and will impress you with how loud it goes despite its size. While increasing the volume, the most important piece about this speaker is that quality stays intact. You won’t experience noise when on max volume, so turn up!

Battery

Depending on volume of course, you can expect 15 to 20 hours of consistent playback from this speaker – not bad right? Like most, it uses a micro USB to charge and takes roughly 60 minutes to hit full charge.

JBL Charge 3

We see the JBL Charge 3 as an amazing combination of sound, features, and price. Just like the UE Boom 2, it plays very loud while maintaining quality and having zero distortion. A unique feature about this speaker is that it can charge your phone or other device while playing! Like the UE Boom 2 it is also completely waterproof. Even still that isn’t a standard feature amongst most bluetooth speakers, so take advantage of this.

Quality

Compared to most portable bluetooth speakers, the JBL Charge 3 is slightly larger and heavier than most. With a size of 213 x 87 x 88.5mm, The JBL Charge 3 will take up a little more space in your bag than most speakers. If you don’t see this as an issue, then you can take advantage of everything else it does.

Sound

We are very impressed with how the JBL Charge 3 performs on a sound level. You can also connect the speaker to multiple speakers to enhance the sound quality, because who needs stereo? The reason this speaker isn’t number 1 is because based on the size of the speaker, we expected more sound power and quality than smaller speakers. While the quality here is amazing, we feel it should be more for the size of the speaker. Or else what’s the point of it being bigger?

Battery

This speaker, like most, boasts a short charge time. Around 60 minutes as well. You can expect 20 hours of constant playback as well, of course while factoring in volume.

Bose Soundlink Mini 2

To date, I have never given a Bose product a negative review. Today, that statement still stands. Visually, this is my favourite speaker – it looks amazing and will be number 1 on my list when I have a bluetooth speaker beauty contest. However, today, it is number 3 – still very impressive! Being an owner of this speaker myself, I’ll make sure not to make any biased opinions.

Quality

The unibody enclosure boasts an amazing exterior appearance on the Bose Soundlink Mini 2, in my opinion, it looks tough. Do not be fooled by the fact that this speaker is not meant to be thrown around and will not take horseplay very well. Being a speaker, I don’t see this as an issue – think of it as an indoor speaker.

Sound

Like the original SoundLink Mini, which was the best sounding speaker of its time, this version hasn’t changed much other than a few enhancements. You will not be disappointed with how loud this speaker goes while maintaining quality. The base is one of the best I’ve seen too. Sound is not a concern here. Based on our experience, and what we hear, you will not be disappointed of the quality regardless of the volume level.

Battery

The battery life on the Bose Soundlink Mini II was good, but compared to others we found it could be better. 10 hours is what we received on a moderate volume to jam out to. That’s still a respectable number and I don’t see me ever listening to it to 10 consecutive hours. However, the two speakers above it boast 15 – 20 hours in continuous playback time, so I think the next iteration needs to step its game up just a little. Keep in mind that the original was 7 hours, and this speaker is slightly older than the two above it which have a slight technology advantage being newer. I expect the next version of the SoundLink to blow these guys out of the water.

Fugoo Style

The Fugoo Style really stands out with its unique appearance and I feel is given less credit in this market than it deserves. The Fugoo has three different styles: Style, Tough, or Sport. While being one of the smaller speakers on the market, it still competes with those that are larger than it all day. On top of this, you’ll be impressed by the quality this speaker pumps out, its battery life, and lastly, the price!

Quality

This speaker has three amazing styles (Style, Tough, Sport) which allows for some customizability for the end user, awesome right? This speaker is very sturdy and has has a combination of plastic and rubber, and is also shockproof, waterproof, and dustproof. You’d have to try really hard to rattle the Fugoo! Once you squip the sport jacket, more accessories are available such as a strap mount and bike mount. These are completely optional features but help make the speaker more versatile and able to be used in more situations.

Sound

The Fugoo comes with a 6 speaker setup which helps it pump out good quality sound at 360 degrees! Even with its small size, you will be impressed with how loud this thing goes, again, while maintaining extremely pristine quality. If you want a combination of portability and great sound, this speaker is for you.

Battery

The worst thing while listening to music on a portable speaker is when the battery dies. A lot of speakers come to the table with 10, 15 and even 20 hours of battery life. We ran this speaker for a whopping 40 hours on moderate volume until it shut off on us. The best we’ve seen yet. This tells us one thing, based on its size, the other speakers have some serious improvements to make to their battery life!

Bang & Olufsen A1

We’ve been talking about a lot of huge brands in this article. Let’s take a step back and bring in one of the underdogs who perform at a high level – Bang & Olufsen. They are known for some very well rewarded audio products, and this speaker is next in line.

Quality

The size of the B&O A1 Has most questioning the quality of it. At first glance, you may think that its size holds it back in terms of quality and performance. I am happy to announce that it is not even close to the case. Of course, one of its most unique qualities on this list is portability, 10/10 naturally. It is built with aluminum and is rock solid just like the others above it.

Sound

Seriously, how good can a speaker of this size sound? I promise that when you hear it for yourself you will be quite amazed with what comes out. It outputs some of the best quality we’ve seen compared to other speakers – even much larger ones. We must admit that the range and volume do take a slight hit – not to say they aren’t good. Compared to the larger speakers, it lacks. Consider it an indoor speaker. If you want a speaker for the backyard, consider something larger.

Battery

The poor speaker, everyone makes such large assumptions because of its size. I’m happy to tell you that we received 24 hours of continuous playback on the B&O A1! Charging time is about an hour too, very respectable numbers. Now remember that there is less going on in the speaker. While it has a smaller battery, it has a smaller speaker and other parts that use up the battery. All in all we’re very impressed with the battery’s performance.

JBL Pulse 2

The JBL name is another one that never disappoints, and that continues legacy moves forward. The JBL Pulse 2, being an upgrade from the original version in terms of sound, quality and battery life, still has a respectable price and keeps core features from the original version. Let’s dive into the features!

Quality

The JBL Pulse 2 is built tough as nails, the exterior quality of this speaker is second to none. The capsule like design of the Pulse 2 helps distinguish it from the rest and even has a slick pulsing light feature, hence its name. While not being one of the lightest speakers we’ve run into, the weight distribution is done quite well so its still comfortable to hold an carry around.

Sound

Just like the original Pulse, the JBL Pulse 2 offers incredible audio capabilities! Where it really shines is bass. If you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music, you may get some amazing benefit out of this speaker. Again I will emphasize the quality, its simply very, very good. For its size you will be very impressed.

Battery

The importance of battery life in a bluetooth speaker is very high, and we made sure every item on this list had a respectable number. With the battery life on some of these models growing, we may start to raise the bar and cut some speakers for next year’s edition. The JBL Pulse 2 provides about 10 hours of continuous playback. Respectable, but we’ve seen 20 hours and even 40 hours on this list. If battery time is a concern, you may want to shop around. This is the only real flaw I see in this speaker. If its for the house, it might not be a big concern. But while bringing it with you places, I’d go for something else.

Bose Soundlink Color 2

The first word that comes to my mind when seeing the Bose Soundlink Color 2 for the first time is unique. Nothing on this entire list has an appearance even close to it. This is on of Bose’s smaller speakers but don’t underestimate its power. It’s also very colorful, there are 4 variations you can choose from: aquatic blue, coral red, soft black, and polar white. Wait for the section on its battery, you’ll be quite impressed!

Quality

Your typical portable bluetooth speaker has a horizontal design, Bose went thr other way and gave the Soundlink Color II a vertical appearance, its just taller than a pop can. Don’t assume that its cheap just because of the plastic exterior, they’ve done an amazing job with a simple and elegant look. On top there are 6 buttons and an LED to indicate battery time. All in all its a pretty robust speaker.

Sound

As mentioned earlier, its really tough to provide any negative feedback on Bose speaker, they’re simply just the best when it comes to quality- even in this speaker which retails for less than $180 now. Want some bass that pumps? Look no further. Bose has never neglected the bass and that lives on through this speaker. While they always excel in lower sounds, it still plays everything else really well – nothing to worry about there. The only flaw with this speaker performance wise if there is the odd muffle at very high volumes depending on the sound.

Battery

Based on its size and power, some might assume the battery lacks, I’m happy to inform you that its the exact opposite. You can expect 10 to 12 hours of constant playback from this beast, who would have thought!? For the price you will pay, this speaker is clearly a great candidate for your next purchase.

Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin Wireless

This may be the largest bluetooth speaker we would ever recommend. If you need a speaker that brings top notch quality to the table then this is for you. The Zeppelin Wireless is the sequel to their previous speaker which was released about 8 years ago. When you combine its elegant appearance with the insane power and quality it provides, this is simply the best high end bluetooth speaker on the market, period.

Quality

Besides a few small ports at the bottom of the unit, the Zeppelin wireless is practically 100% sealed. As far as connectivity goes, you can tap into airplay, bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and of course, aux.

Sound

When it comes to the sound quality of this speaker, there is so much to talk about. I’ve summarized it as much as possible. At the edges of this speaker, there are two 25mm tweeters to bring you the best possible treble in a bluetooth speaker. The original design of the previous model had reviews of there being too much bass sometimes, in this model they tweaked the design so the twin flow ports were removed from the back of the unit. Don’t take this as a hint of less bass, there is still a lot to go around! Due to the size of the actual speakers and variation, you can expect incredible sound quality compared to smaller portable speakers. Whether you’re listening to extreme bass, high treble, or vocals, the speaker can adjust perfectly for an optimal listening experience.

Battery

This isn’t considered a portable speaker, thus it is required to be plugged in at all times. We would of course consider this an indoor speaker which is in a somewhat permanent spot.

JBL Flip 3

The concept of the JBL Flip 3 is actually pretty slick and is where the name comes from. You can use the speaker either vertically or horizontally, depending on your listening preference. Need range? Flip it vertical and you will experience a larger listening radius. Want more density in a smaller area? Use is horizontally, pretty simple right? Let’s see how the rest of its features stack up.

Quality

The JBL Flip 3 is just as it appears, rock solid. It has a rubber and plastic combination and is flat black, I think this speaker look super mean ready to crush some beats! It is also water resistant, shock resistant, the whole nine yards. It performs at its peak whether it is placed vertically or horizontally. Overall a quality speaker with a cool look!

Sound

Seeing as this is the 3rd generation of its series, you may wonder how good the quality actually is. I can comfortably tell you you it is that much better than the previous versions and will continue to excel. In the 3rd version, JBL has added a larger speaker allowing you to seek higher volume ranges while maintaining quality. The odd song might give you a little feedback at full blast, but its a pretty rare case – not something I would worry about. Note that this is a louder speaker, so in most cases you wouldn’t need full blast. We’ve experienced amazing treble sounds, great bass of course, and the vocals are amazing! This is definitely a great addition to the JBL family.

Battery

While the JBL Flip 3 puts up some acceptable numbers, its nothing to get excited about. We saw an average of 10 hours, which is pretty good. That is 2-4 hours more than its previous version, so its something they are always working on. Keep in mind that this version packs more power than the previous, so I’d say its a step in the right direction and will continue to accelerate! Solid speaker in the end, highly recommended!

V-Moda Remix

The V-Moda Remix is a high-end portable bluetooth speaker for those who want to spend just a little more money (about $300). This speaker boasts its supreme sound quality, its highly customizable, and has a built-in headphone amp.

Quality

The V-Moda Remix comes has two different options: aluminum and vegan leather. The speaker is pretty small compared to others, but not the smallest we’ve seen. You can also change the surfaces of this speaker and you have quite a few options, especially if you want to get fancy or out of the box! Another cool feature is that it has a headphone amp. So if you have some headphones that need a little boost, plug them in here and you won’t be disappointed.

Sound

We found that the Remix doesn’t go super loud, which I feel is by design to enforce quality no matter what song you’re listening to. While testing different songs with both highs, lows, and extreme bass, we were overall very satisfied with what we heard. What really impressed us was the sound radius. If you’re outside or in a fairly large indoor room, this speaker performs phenomenally!

Battery

V-MODA will tell you the battery is about 10 hours, did they ever hit the nail on the head. We experienced nothing less than 10 hours and up to even 15 hours depending on the volume. While again this isn’t a crazy number to get excited about, its respectable and in most cases will be more than enough. Also since it uses a USB-C charging adapter, the charging experience is much better than those who use micro USB. If you’re looking to spend a little more money, we highly recommend ths V-MODA Remix!
