5 Essential Cyber-Security Tips for Small Businesses

June 10, 2020

They say that we’re only as strong as our weakest link. And this statement holds true, especially when it involves cyber-security. When you get right down to it, we all rely on technology to meet the needs of our companies. Even smaller businesses depend on it to ensure the efficiency and productivity of their operations. And since we’re all equally susceptible to cyber-attacks and their financially catastrophic effects, it makes sense to ensure that all measures are taken to keep us protected. To this end, here are some cyber-security tips that all small business owners must know.

Women, Teamwork, Team, Business, People, Office

1. Choose a reliable cyber-security provider

Having an in-house team to handle cyber-security measures can require a sizeable commitment of financial resources that many small businesses cannot afford. And because of this, it’s often a better approach to outsource the job to a third-party company. But before you decide to commit, make sure that the selected provider is reputable and reliable like MMR IT. In this way, you’ll have the peace of mind that your business remains protected from the threats of cyber-attacks.

2. Provide necessary awareness training

There’s a good reason why it’s crucial to train your workforce with the necessary awareness training in cyber-security. After all, your employees will be the ones handling sensitive company data. And while it may sound like additional expenditure, by investing in training your workers on the basics of cyber-security, you’ll minimise – if not mitigate – the chances of phishing and hacking attempts to be successful.

3. Make sure you back up crucial data

Enforcing a back-up policy is a necessity. And for a good reason: in the event of a cyber-attack, there’s always a chance that essential files and documents can be lost or corrupted. And this can put a company in dire financial straits as a result. But by making it a habit to back up crucial data, you’ll make sure that any lost data can be recovered quickly and without fail.

4. Keep your software updated

No software is perfect. And it is for this reason that developers continue to release patches and correct their faults. So make sure that you keep your software up-to-date. If possible, create a schedule for the patches to be applied. As simple as this is, you’ll be surprised at how effective it can be in making you less susceptible to the threat of cyber-attacks.

5. Limit access

Limiting access to specific personnel is necessary to ensure the data protection of any company. As such, it’s crucial to make sure that only the right people are given the authorisation to make use of specific software or have access to critical information. In this way, you’ll minimise the chances for any cyber-attacks to happen.

It’s not hard to see the importance of cyber-security in business. After all, it can prevent attacks that could potentially impede the success of a company or be catastrophic for them financially. So make sure that you follow these tips to avoid a lot of trouble.
