There is a general understanding that first impressions matter in everything we do in relation to other human beings. In business as well, first impressions are undoubtedly crucial because they can make or mar business relationships.
Jen Auh, a renowned image consultant who works with businessmen trying to rebrand themselves, speaks to us in this interview on why first impressions matter and how businessmen can develop their style and general outlook.
Can you tell us why businessmen should even bother about how they look in the first place?
Jen Auh “Your physical appearance is the first point of contact for people that you meet, and with that, it doesn’t take very long for someone to form a lasting opinion of you. This is more important in business where investors, other businessmen, and customers will entrust their money with you.
Business is risk-taking, and your appearance can be that little push to get an investor to take a significant risk on your proposal.”
How do physical appearance and style genuinely affect business chances?
Jen Auh “People usually observe how you dress and your body language to create a first impression. This is why businessmen should take seriously and be concerned with how they appear in their line of work.
As a businessman, physical appearance and style do not only refer to how you dress but also involves how confident you are, your manner of speaking, and your general body language.”
What behaviors and habits should businessmen should do in order to make an excellent first impression?
Jen Auh “When it comes to business, your first impression should put you across as being professional. A businessman should not be lazy to dress in a way that fits his line of work.
One should also take care of its skin to avoid premature aging. You don’t want to look older than your actual age.
It would also help to put aside any air of arrogance because the goal is to be confident and not arrogant. Making a great first impression in business matters because that will determine your success or failure to a large extent.”
What do you focus on with your clients regarding their style?
Jean Auh “Most of my clients are businessmen who often lack style and don’t have the time to develop the appropriate look for themselves. So, I am tasked with helping them know that they need to make certain changes, dress smarter and look better.
Primarily, dressing is the most critical aspect, so I ensure that their clothing, shoes, and accessories get a total makeover to improve their appearances. I start by advising them to get the six wardrobe staples every guy should own.
I also emphasize the need for better body posture, articulated speaking, and serious business skills.
How well do you think you have improved your clients’ chances of leaving a good first Impression?
Jen Auh “I recognize the fact that clients’ feedback is what validates the work that I do, so I make sure to give my clients the type of service that they can hardly get anywhere else.
The positive reviews from clients on the immense change they experience after employing the services I offer is enough proof to show that they are getting better at leaving great first impressions.”
