The Impact of Data in the Healthcare Industry

April 1, 2019

If you’re interested in learning about the impact of data, in the near future on the healthcare sector, simply continue reading.

The impact of data in the healthcare industry:

  1. Data can be used to help find cures for serious illnesses such as cancer

Computer systems that have been designed to automatically analyse large volumes of data, which is referred to as big data, in order to find patterns in data samples, that may help scientists make breakthroughs in discovering cures for serious diseases such as cancer.

As an example a computer system may be able to analyse trends and patterns of patients around the world who have been diagnosed with cancer. Such system may be able to find genetic links between millions of individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer. That may help scientists find a cure or more effective treatment for these patients.

  1. AI systems can use data to help medical professionals complete highly repetitive tasks

In the future AI reasoning systems will be able to make simple decisions for medical professionals and to perform highly repetitive paperwork for doctors and nurses, which will free up medical professionals’ time to give a higher quality of service to their patients.

As an example an AI reasoning system may be able to help a doctor choose the best possible treatment for a particular illness. As an AI reasoning system will be able to scan a patient’s medical records and test results to come up with the most effective treatment plan possible.

  1. Data can be shared across the world in order to help patients get the best possible care

Information which patients are happy to share, can be shared with other medical practitioners around the world, in order to help doctors better treat patients. As more data doctors have on individuals and illnesses and the effects of various medication on patients, the easier it will be for doctors to give their patients an exemplary level of care.

As an example the same information can be shared between cancer researchers, oncologists and surgeons, to benefit individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer.

  1. Medical data can be used to help doctors diagnose illnesses quickly

Most serious illnesses can be cured quite easily if they are caught straight away. So it’s important for doctors to be able to analyse medical data, in order to help their patients avoid developing potentially fatal illnesses and diseases.

As an example, once medical data around cancer has been studied for a lengthy period of time, scientists should have a clearer idea of actions that individuals can take to avoid cancer.

Just think, at a certain point in history, individuals had no idea that spending hours sunbathing a day could lead to the development of melanoma, which is a common form of skin cancer.

  1. Big data can be used to detect if individuals have a high risk of contracting a certain illness

As an example, if a software system finds that an individual has a high genetic risk of contracting a deadly disease, it may be able to alert their doctor.

Hopefully after learning a bit about data in the healthcare industry, you’re now aware of how many lives can be saved as a direct result of the collation and analyzation of data in the near future.
